The First Step

The Fix Series -Part III

Community is step 1.

Look, I am one of the most misanthropic people you will find, and it’s not exactly because I hate people in general. I will explain that in a moment, and then you will see that the reaction is mutual, and most people will be as misanthropic towards me as I am towards them. Including probably you, dear reader. As I said, it is not exactly that I hate people, to be more precise:

  1. I hate evil people
  2. I intensely dislike lazy people, especially intellectually lazy ones
  3. I either dislike or have absolutely not much at all to discuss or interact for with stupid people (which in my case generally means 9,999 people out of 10,000 in the best of cases)
  4. Even the people I find to be kind, pleasant, and helpful are relatively boring for me, and usually not really ones I can connect with other than superficially (see 3. Above)
  5. I really hate bureaucratic nonsensical procedures and everyone and everything related to them. I am very capable in navigating that shit, but I hate it nonetheless.
  6. The things that do interest me or I find entertaining are normally things in which most people have little to no interest if not active aversion, and to then find someone that also has those interests and does not fall foul of the other five points above is about as likely as finding dodo teeth.

Nevertheless, you cannot build a city state, or even just a small group of people that help each other succeed and increase in effectiveness without other people.

Tolerating them on a purely materialistic/selfish/utilitarian basis is also never going to work long term.

The only things that do work long term are:

  1. A common REAL religion you BOTH believe in.
  2. Blood ties
  3. Real friendships forged in hardships too
  4. Employer-employee as long as the business continues to exist for both parties

And even those are not guaranteed.

So… the first step, especially if you are atomised younger man, is to learn to be sociable and make friends in the real world.

I produced a couple of tabletop role playing games so parents can introduce it for their children and possibly they in turn to their friends. Or that adults can play too, just for fun.

It IS fun, if you can just get over your shyness and get a couple of others to do the same and play pretend. There used to be a hilarious online site that recorded tabletop games they used to have, and these were all middle aged guys. I forgot the name of it now and it probably no longer exists, but it was funny, and it was clear they had fun playing it.

Update: thanks to AI I found the surviving wayback machine link to it. Although the group has disappeared over 20 years ago. I truly think it’s worth having a read and look at one or two of their “field reports”.

Anyway, you don’t need to play RPGs to make friends, join a martial arts class, take up a sport, learn combat shooting, go on hikes with people. The point is learn to communicate and become friendly with everyone you meet. In the flesh. Get out there and find and create your mini tribe. You need to do that before you can implement any of the valuable changes I write about we should aim for in the larger dystopic world we currently inhabit.
